Obituary

Mary Kathryn Johnson, age 97 and a resident of Winona Lake, passed away quietly on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at 12:04 p.m. at Grace Village Retirement Community.

Mary was born on February 15, 1922 in Huntington County, Indiana. She was the only daughter of Fred and Belle (Elder) Ahlfeld. She was a 1940 graduate of Chester High School outside of North Manchester.

Mary was united in marriage to Reverend Wayne R. Johnson on August 29, 1941. Together the two would share more than sixty-nine years. To their union four children and their families were born. Wayne preceded Mary in passing in September 2010.

Mary was a kind, caring person and a mother with unconditional love for her family. She was a longtime member of Claypool United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She had lived at Grace Village for the past 19 years and enjoyed the Hymn Sings, Bible study and fellowship she found there.

Those who survive with memories to cherish include her son: Jerry (wife, Lois) Johnson of Claypool; daughters: Janet Lentz of Mt. Pleasant, NC and Barbara (husband, Mike) Wolfe of Mesa, AZ; nine grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Wayne, those who preceded her in passing include son, Stephen Johnson; two brothers, John Ahlfeld and Walter Ahlfeld and son-in-law, Charles “Bud” Lentz.

A Life Celebration will be held at Titus Funeral Home, 2000 East Sheridan Street, Warsaw on Thursday, August 1st with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Chaplain Bryan Benjamin of Grace Village will officiate Mary’s funeral service at 11 a.m. with burial to follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, North Manchester.

Memorial gifts may be directed to Caring Friends at Grace Village, 337 Grace Village Dr. Winona Lake, IN 46590.

Janet and Barbara,
Please accept our condolences on the passing of your mother. She was truly a lady. Mom thought so much of her, and enjoyed seeing you as well. We always knew when the "Johnson girls" were in town!
I regret that I'm tied up with grandchildren tomorrow, so unable to attend the life celebration. Mom wouldn't have missed it if she were well!
Please feel free to get my contact information from Rick if you'd like.
You and your family will be in our prayers.
